How
are families selected for Habitat homes?
The Marshall Area Habitat has
a family selection process that is used to select families. Please view
the family selection qualifications page to learn more about specific
qualifications.

Does
Habitat do home repairs?
At this time, the Marshall Area
Habitat does not do home repairs. Please contact the United
Way to locate local organizations that
do home repair.

How much are house payments (mortgages)?
Habitat Partner Families pay between
$275-$300 per month for their mortgages over 20, 25 or 30 years. Payment
includes escrow for homeowner's insurance and taxes. The cost of the
house is determined by the square footage and associated land and materials
costs.

What size houses does Habitat build?
The Marshall Area Habitat builds
2 and 3 bedroom, 1 to 1 1/2 baths, between 1,000 and 1,100 square feet.

Where does Habitat build?
Habitat houses are usually built
on donated or purchased property throughout the Marshall area.

What appliances come with the house?
Each house has a new Whirlpool
refrigerator and range. Partner Families have the option of purchasing
a Whirlpool washer and dryer by combining a small monthly payment with
their mortgage. Appliances have a one year warranty.

Does Habitat build garages?
No. Habitat is able to build houses with more
living space by not included garages.

Who chooses the lot or house plan?
Habitat works closely with Partner Families when
choosing lots and house plans. We currently have three house plans from
which to choose.

What is meant by "Sweat "Equity"?
Habitat is unique in that no down payment is required
to purchase a home. However, Partner Families are required to complete
350 hours of their family's time in the building of their home and or
the homes of other Partner Families.

What will my neighbors be like?
In one word, DIVERSE. Partner Families are all
unique. Habitat for Humanity of the Marshall Area does not discriminate
on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability,
family status, marital status, sexual orientation or age.

How long does it take to build a house?
The application process can take up to four months
or longer. Once approved, plan on at least six months before closing
on the house. This is all dependent on the building schedule, applicant
participation, and completion of all paperwork and required documentation.

How do I volunteer?
New volunteers are encouraged to complete and
mail the Volunteer Information Form first. You will be contacted when and

Can I bring a group?
Groups from faith communities, corporations, educational
organizations and community groups are all welcome to volunteer with
Habitat for Humanity. Group size depends on when and where your group
can be scheduled to work. For more information contact Al

I'm 14, can I help build a Habitat House?
Yes. All volunteers with Habitat of the Marshall
Area who are at least 14 years of age are allowed to work. Volunteers
must be at least 16 to operate power tools, however.

Do I need building experience to volunteer?
No prior building experience is required to be
a Habitat volunteer.

When do you build?
We are trying to build year round. Currently,
our work days are on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to mid afternoon, depending
on what is being done that day and the number of volunteers available.

What hours do you work?
Work days start at 8:00 AM and usually end mid
afternoon. We encourage volunteers to arrive on time. Late arrivals
may cause delays in the start of the work day thus delaying the overall
construction schedule.

What should I wear on the construction site?
Wear sturdy shoes and work clothes. We suggest
work/hiking boots, jeans, a t-shirt and possibly a sweatshirt. Be aware
that much of the work is outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather.

Do I need to bring my own tools and paintbrushes?
If you have them, please bring them. If not, we
will try to outfit you with some of ours. Tools such as hammers, tape
measures, pencils and nail pouches are always helpful.

Who will show me what to do?
The Construction Supervisor and his assistants
have years of experience building homes. They will do their best to
make sure you have a fun, meaningful and safe experience.
